Something Other Than Writing

I'm going to go to Europe soon and I think of it in my mind as probably any other American who never went there would--I think of cathedrals, and castles, with high towers on top. I think of lush green grass and crowds of people who speak a different language. I think of an entirely different place.

But how the Europeans would feel about their continent I'm not sure. I'd bet they'd be proud about all the rich history and everything, but to them, they might be more at home with all this grandeur. To them, maybe America is dream vaccation destination.

Weird Thought

I just realized that I always think of the sun as masculine and the moon as feminine, for no real reason. It's sort of the same with ages -- I think of one as masculine, two as feminine, three as neutral, four as masculine, five as feminine, six as feminine, seven as masculine, eight as neutral, nine as neutral, ten as feminine, eleven as masculine, and so on in no particular sort of pattern. Maybe it's becuase I know more girl people who are two or five or six or ten or whatever. My sister is ten, my classmate is ten. I'll be ten soon. Actually, to be more exact, two years. But I've been one year old, I've been four years old, I've been seven years old. I think it might be the sound of the number which makes me think of them of masculine or feminine, but I'm not sure. Oh well. I suppose I'll leave this mystery to rest.

Cooking with Adrianna

Some people think that the only thing I do all day is read and write. That's not true, because I also love to cook, and today I cooked some pizza with my older sister, Adrianna. It wasn't really all pizza or anything, in fact I didn't even make any pizza --- I only made one little bun and three hearts (with the help of a cookie cutter) out of dough and I colored it with tomato sauce. I thought it would taste a little more like tomato sauce, but really it tasted more like bread with a bit of sauce spread over. Adrianna's pizza was a hit, though. My mom devoured some (despite the fact pizza is her sworn archenemy) and I took a huge slice. Adrianna made two little cats, a bun, and two large pizzas. I can't wait to cook again!

Thanks Everybody!

So many people are writing nice things about me that I feel...so joyful! I'm really grateful for all their praise and encouragement to me, and I feel like I just can't thank them enough. However, I'm trying to put my gratitude into words so that the public can understand!

THANK YOU!!!

Presentations

I demonstrated my writing skills at Medina Elementary in Bellevue just two days ago (on the fifth of January) and I did a presentation just today, on Saturday, at the Northwest Chinese School in Kirkland, where we gather quite a crowd. We sold about ten books, so overall we did pretty well. There will be more presentations in the future, but this will be all on my this entry for now!

Hello Everybody

Holiday greetings and thanks to the fans who posted comments for my last blog and the previous ones before it, I'm sorry for the delay but from now on I'll do my best to write in my blog as much as possible. With Christmas, my sister's birthday, and my mom's birthday coming up, there's been a lot to do and a lot to think about.

Since we were unable to purchase a Christmas tree for our living room, we (My older sister Adrianna and I) constructed a strange-looking but interesting tree of four/five boxes, a stick and a hanger, one particularly sinister witch's hat, and a large cover, likely smuggled from my bed. Although our tree is not too ugly and I made sure to make presents for everyone, I hope that all of you have a better tree than us, and that your tree is not a jumble of old, cardboard boxes.

My appearance on KOMO 4 news

'She's Only 8, And She's Written A Book!'November 15, 2005 By John Sharify

REDMOND - Her feet didn't even touch the floor, and yet then-7-year-old Adora Svitak was spitting out one short story after another when we met her last February.
"You just can't stop writing?" I asked her. "Probably not", she responded.
Her resume included 300 short stories.
After we did that story on KOMO 4 News, ABC's Good Morning America interviewed Adora. Peter Jennings was on the set that morning. The late ABC anchorman was just as curious about Adora and her talents, as we were.
Mr. Jennings never got to know this about her: "I just turned 8, and I just wrote my book 'Flying Fingers," Adora told 3rd graders at Redmond's Horace Mann Elementary.
One student observed: "I think it's pretty amazing that she's only 8 and she's written a book!"
Adora wrote the book to spread the joy of writing. It's a 'how to' book. The Redmond girl believes anyone can write, you just need a little inspiration.
I asked her: "What's the key to being creative?" Adora responded: "Just letting your ideas flow, not holding them back".
Adora wants to share her gift with others. That's why she's visiting the 3rd grade class at Horace Mann Elementary.
"Gift? Maybe," says Adora's mother Joyce. "But I think all children have the gift. It's how to discover and develop them."
Adora will be autographing her book 'Flying Fingers' at Third Place Books in Forest Park. It's this Sunday (Nov. 20) at 3:30.
If you want more information about the book and Adora's work go to www.adorasvitak.com.

Great Movie

I just finished watching a great movie yesterday--it's called Citizen Kane, and it's one of the best movies of the century. Even though I said we could have a book club, I will not stop anybody from recommending movies, games, or any other fun activities. One of my favorite games is Cranium, and it's really entertaining and educational, plus the entire family can play it. Another is Scrabble and I really like Chess and Checkers.

Oh by the way --- I'll be at Third Place Books in Forest Lake Park on Nov. 20 at 3:30
You can listen to my sister Adrianna's violin if you have enough of my fiery words.
I'll be doing live writing and I'll make my voice boom in the microphone.
At least I hope so.

Book Club Idea

I think it would be really cool to have a book club---we could all recommend books, read them, and then write book reviews and post them on the blog. I would definitely recommend The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis, all the Harry Potter books (I'm sure everyone has read those), the Redwall series by Brian Jacque, Napoleon by Albert Marren (he wrote a lot of other biographies, but my favorite is Napoleon), the books by Tamora Pierce, books by Jane Yolen, Cricket, Cobblestone, and Cicada magazines. Those are magazines, but they're very good and it would be cool to read them. I also like to read books stuffed with legends and myths, so you might want to read Mythology, a book I bought from Costco. If you want to recommend any books you can just go to my blog and put it on comments.

I will be on Northwest Cable News and Komo4 News next week, and I'll appear on Kiro7 Eyewitness News in about a week in a half. If you wish to know the exact time please email me.

Hope you all the best!

Adora
